Jurong
Shipyard delivers S$67 million Cableship "ASEAN EXPLORER"
Jurong
Shipyard, a subsidiary of SembCorp Marine announces the delivery
of the S$67 million Cableship, Asean Explorer to its owner, ACPL
Marine Pte Ltd (AMPL). The delivery marks an important milestone,
as Jurong Shipyard is able to carve a niche in the higher value
shipbuilding market having established itself as a shipbuilder
for the product/chemical tankers and container vessels.
AMPL
is a 70:30 joint venture between ASEAN Cableship (ACPL) and SingTel.
Established in 1986 by the ASEAN telecommunications authorities,
ASEAN Cableship is one of the leading companies in the submarine
tele communications fiber optic cable industry. SingTel is Asia's
leading communications company with extensive interests in submarine
cable systems.
The
Cableship was named Asean Explorer at a christening ceremony held
in May 2002 by Lady Sponsor Ms Nenita Lim Cruz, one of the Directors
of ASEAN Cableship (ACPL).
The
9,650 dwt Cableship Asean Explorer is specially designed to minimise
toll amplitude in service conditions and for prolonged periods
of worldwide operation with the exception of the Artic and Antarctic.
The cableship has space reservations and basic facilities for
future deployment of a work -class Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV)
system.
Executive
Director of Jurong Shipyard Mr Wong Weng Sun said the success
of this project called for both commitment and determination from
the people working on it. Said Mr Wong, "ACPL Marine Pte
Ltd and Jurong Shipyard have worked together to develop and build
this modern and sophisticated cable laying ship. She is designed
with good sea keeping capability, excellent bollard pull and with
respectable speed. Together, we were able to design and integrate
the marine systems, sophisticated cable handling and advance navigational
equipment to ensure optimal performance."
Cableship
ASEAN EXPLORER left the yard on July 10, 2002 and will be making
her maiden voyage to the Philippines for her first cable laying
project beginning September 2002 for a period of approximately
three months.
